HOW TO USE THE TUBE

How to Use the Tube

London’s Underground (the Tube) is the fastest way to get around the city. It’s safe, efficient, and easy once you know the basics. This guide walks you through everything — from tapping in to choosing the right line — so you can travel confidently.

Quick Tube Tips

Tap in and out with the same card
Stand on the right of escalators
Let passengers off before boarding
Avoid peak hours if possible
Follow the coloured lines on maps
Keep your Oyster/contactless ready

Step 1: Choose How to Pay

You can use:

Contactless card
Apple Pay / Google Pay
Oyster card

Tip: Contactless is easiest — no topping up.

Step 2: Tap In

At the station entrance:

Tap your card/phone on the yellow reader
Gates will open
Don’t double‑tap or switch cards

Important: Always use the same card/device for your whole journey.

Step 3: Follow the Signs

Tube stations are well‑signed. Look for:

Line colours (e.g., Central = red, Piccadilly = dark blue)
Direction (Eastbound, Westbound, Northbound, Southbound)
Final destination of the train

Tip: Use Citymapper or Google Maps for real‑time directions.

Step 4: On the Train

Let people off before you get on
Move down inside the carriage
Keep bags close
Mind the gap when stepping off

Step 5: Tap Out

At your destination:

Tap the same card/phone on the yellow reader
Gates will open
Your fare is calculated automatically

Note: Buses do not require tapping out.

Peak vs Off‑Peak

Peak hours:
Monday–Friday
6:30–9:30am and 4–7pm
Off‑peak:
All other times
Cheaper fares

Tip: Travel after 9:30am for lower prices.
